"Who am I anyway?
Am I my resume?
That is a picture of a person
I don't know."
— A Chorus Line

While we don't believe that a resume can give you a full picture of who a person is, we would like to take you behind the scenes of COMPACT BROADWAY and briefly introduce you to our team. We hope that by the end of our little backstage tour, you will have a better understanding of what our collaborators bring to the project.

As the Creator of our project, Douglas Young has been imagining the possibilities of COMPACT BROADWAY for many years now. But while this idea was gestating, he found time to earn degrees in Theatre Arts and Business Administration, while also writing for entertainment magazines and building careers in both theatre and film. He is currently the Director of Theatrical Programming for the Blumenthal Performing Arts Center, but during the course of his theatre career he has played many different roles, including technician, designer, performer, administrator, writer, director and producer. The highlight of his performing days was originating the role of Billy Crocker in the 1988 revision of Anything Goes for the first American production performed outside of Lincoln Center Theater. He spent more than a decade in film production working with such talents as Jason Alexander, Diahann Carroll, James Coburn, Blythe Danner, Bruce Dern, Whoopi Goldberg, Michael Jeter, Richard Kiley, Frank Langella, Audra McDonald, Sam Shepard and Robin Williams. Currently a member of both the American Theatre Wing and The League of American Theatres and Producers, he also serves as a member of the League's Education Committee. As a Producer and the Host of COMPACT BROADWAY, Douglas enjoys bringing his diverse arts and entertainment experience to the realm of public radio.

Gillian Albinski

In her dual role as a Producer and the Director of COMPACT BROADWAY, Gillian Albinski combines her production background with her creative abilities. A Theatre Arts alumni of the Pennsylvania Governor's School of the Arts and a graduate of Penn State University with a degree in Theatre Arts, Gillian spent the majority of her theatre career working in the prop departments of various professional theatres, including the Actors Theatre of Louisville, the North Carolina Shakespeare Festival and the La Jolla Playhouse, (where she was a part of the pre-Broadway run of How To Succeed In Business Without Really Trying starring Matthew Broderick). Following the time-honored tradition of starting in theatre and moving to film, Gillian has been a part of such films as He Got Game, The Royal Tenenbaums and Shallow Hal, and has served as Prop Master for the feature films The Strangers, Remember The Daze, and Walker Payne , the CBS movie Having Our Say and the CBS mini-series Shake, Rattle and Roll. She has also held key art department positions on national commercials for clients such as American Express, Coca-Cola, Craftsman Tools, ESPN, International Paper, NBC and Wachovia. In addition, she held the job of Design Manager for Season 3 of the Discovery Channel's hit daytime series Surprise By Design. Although Gillian was once one of the few people in show business who said they never wanted to direct, we give her the props she deserves for the essential contribution she makes in bringing the pieces of our project together as a cohesive whole.

As our resident Musical Director and Pianist, John Coffey is the person on our staff who always knows the score, both literally and figuratively. With a Master's degree in Piano Performance from Juilliard, John has performed as a concert pianist with various orchestras and his skills have given him the opportunity to play for a number of legendary artists, including Aaron Copland and Leonard Bernstein. Much like the classically trained Mr. Bernstein, John ventured into musical theatre and created five musicals of his own, including We Are The People Too. In addition to his skills as a musician and musical director for both musical theatre and opera, John has taught at the university level, directed various musicals, worked as an arts administrator and served on the board of the North Carolina Theatre Conference. Moving briefly into the role of performer, John originated the role of Oscar in the historic Moscow production of 42nd Street but more recently toured with The Full Monty, first as the Assistant Conductor and then he returned as the Musical Director.

Our nickname for correspondent Peter Royston at COMPACT BROADWAY is "The Professor" because he is our go-to guy when we need to know the details of theatre minutia. For the past ten years, Peter has worked in various capacities to bridge the gap between the entertainment industry and the educational community. As the co-founder and former co-director of Theatre Direct's educational program, Broadway Classroom, he helped bring thousands of students to Broadway, to experience and learn from live theatre. These days, Peter runs Guidewrite, and he is the author of study guides for over 35 Broadway, Off-Broadway, Touring and Regional productions, including such hits as The Phantom of the Opera, Rent, The Lion King, Riverdance, Thoroughly Modern Millie, On the Record, All Shook Up and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. A contributor to Center Stage, Stagebill, Equity News and American Theatre magazines, Peter is the author of the special timeline/history of Actors' Equity, created for the Union’s 90th anniversary in 2003, which won First Prize in the New York Labor Press Awards. Just like Peggy Sawyer of 42nd Street fame, correspondent Annie Lawrence is a native of Allentown, Pennsylvania, where she was active with community theatres in her hometown. At the Civic Theatre of Allentown, Annie performed the roles of Cassie in A Chorus Line, Emily in Our Town and Annelle in Steel Magnolias. She also appeared as Carole Cutrere in Orpheus Descending with the Theatre Outlet. A Related Arts major in Theatre/Dance/Literature, Annie graduated with a BFA from Kutztown University. She then went on to complete her Med at Lesley College in Massachusetts, where her concentration was Arts in Education. Annie served as Office Manager for the New York based theatre design specialists Sachs Morgan Studios, before becoming ordained as an Interfaith Minister at The New Seminary, where she is Dean of Students. Today Reverend Annie continues sharing her passion for theatre as a freelance performer/writer, a wedding officiant, a Big Sisters mentor, and now as a contributor to COMPACT BROADWAY.

A recent addition to the COMPACT BROADWAY team for our studio recordings in New York is A/G Studio, a full service recording facility specializing in post-production sound, mixing, ADR and more for film, theatre, television and multimedia. Established in 2002 and located conveniently for us in the Times Square Theatre District, A/G Studio serves the needs of diverse projects ranging from clients like Toys "R" Us and McDonald's to the animated holiday special The Littlest Light on the Christmas Tree, featuring the voice of Jane Seymour. Of course a sound studio is only as good as the person behind the controls and in this case we are fortunate to have a true theatre sound designer in the form of owner Jerry Yager. In addition to having designed sound for the Broadway shows Hedda Gabler, Match and The Price, Jerry received a Drama Desk nomination for the Off-Broadway production of Up Against The Wind. Audiences throughout the country have also heard Jerry's work in theatres such as Actors Theatre of Louisville, Lincoln Center Theater, New York Theatre Workshop, Westport Playhouse and the Williamstown Theatre Festival. Now you know why our sound is in good hands with Jerry Yager and A/G Studio!
